Skills and competences
Enterprise Architects are what is typically called generalizing specialists.
They are generalists in the sense that they have enough business knowledge to be able to talk to users, their managers and business experts. They also know how to conduct studies, workshops and even start up and follow up projects. These personal skills are combined with general basic technology knowledge of IT like Object Orientation, Project Management, development methods, UML, XML, SQL, EAI and Web Services.
They are also specialists in the sense that they have acquired profound knowledge in at least two of the following technologies:
- Java (BEA, IBM Websphere, Oracle iAS, JBOSS) or .NET application servers;
- relational database technology (Oracle, MS SQLServer, IBM DB2);
- EAI and ESB product suites (BEA Aqualogic, IBM Websphere MQ, MS Biztalk, Oracle, Sun Seebeyond, Tibco, WebMethods);
- Open Source technologies (Spring, Hibernate, ServiceMix, Mule, Apache Jakarta Libraries,…);
- User Interfaces (Swing, MS, JFS, Browser – Ajax,…);
- Security and Identity Management (Sun IDM, Oracle IDM, Microsoft IAM,…);
- Document Management Suites (Documentum, Oracle, Al Fresco,…);
- Development tools: IDE’s like Eclipse, JDeveloper, MS Visual Studio; Versioning with CVS, Subversion, Visual Sourcesafe; Unit testing like jUnit, nUnit; Automatic Build Tools like Maven, CruiseControl.
So Enterprise Application Integration Architects have the necessary skills:
- to develop and align architectures using agile methods and principles;
- to describe architectures in clear deliverables;
- for hands-on developing proof of concepts;
- for coaching projects and software development teams;
- to conduct structured availability and performance tests.
